Episode Seven: Grey Area
I chat to my friend Lucy this week. Lucy’s story is really interesting because she has a really high rock bottom. And by that I don’t mean that she’s got awesome buns of steel like me. No, I mean before she gave up drinking, nearly four years ago now, her life wasn’t beset with drunken benders. She never got into any obvious trouble with drinking. She never went on any three day benders. She never got arrested for being drunk and disorderly. She never got behind the wheel when she wasn’t meant to. In fact she barely had a hangover that lasted beyond 2pm.
What she did have, however, is what millions of people have; an unhealthy dependence on alcohol that went under the radar for years. An obsessive, but strictly controlled habit that helped to prop her up through life. A drinking problem that wasn’t deemed quite bad enough, by society’s stereotypical standards, to warrant stopping.
Lucy’s story is from the massive grey area of problem drinking. The unhappy millions that are led to believe that their problem can’t be that bad, because if it was – it’d be more obvious.
